CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate Change is a fact, not a theory, and if left unchecked has the potential
to catastrophically reshape our planet for generations to come. The effects of climate
change are severe weather, coastal flooding, heat wave, drought, ecosystem disruption,
food/water shortages, infectious diseases and the accompanying toll in the loss
of human life and property. We have now reached a critical stage where global warming
has already seriously impacted lives, health and economies and will pose an even
greater future threat to mankind if we fail to act now.
To protect against such an adversarial climate requires a location driven design/build
methodology that not only offers the traditional WMD & storm protection measures,
but must also maintain a sustainable biosphere acceptable to human life. Appreciation
of the scale and type of influence climate change has on human health requires a
new perspective on threat mitigation designs and recognition of health-specific
adaptation measures for sustainable life support, water source, food and storage
parameters.
In effect, climate change and variability cause death and disease through natural
disasters such as severe storms, heat waves, droughts and floods. In addition, many
diseases are highly sensitive to temperature and precipitation changes including
common vector-borne (mosquitoes, etc.) diseases like malaria and dengue as well
as other major killers such as malnutrition and diarrhea. Shortages of fresh water
and the shrinking area of arable lands for food cultivation require innovated, site
driven protection programming to achieve sustainability and quality of life. Certain
geographical areas will be more susceptible to the effects of climate change such
as developing countries, densely populated coastal areas, high mountain zones, islands
and areas already arid.
At Hardened Structures we have developed specific site selection and protection
programming measures addressing the anticipated effects of global warming including:
- Extreme Weather
- Fatal Heat Waves
- Floods
- Infectious Disease Dynamics
- Long Term Drought
- Food Shortage
- Water Shortage
- Decrease in Food Cultivation
From a sheltering perspective, the first order question is how to maintain a continuing
quality of life for you and your family. At Hardened Structures, our architects,
engineers and scientists utilize a Multi-Hazard Engineering approach to design homes
and organic farms to mitigate the effects of Global Warming and associated Climate
Change. We can provide full architectural/engineering designs or work with your
architect to custom design a home or site compound for most locations in North America.
